THE GREAT KAROO..........some moments...
ABOUT ROCKS
You'll not understand the Great Karoo
Until you get the feel of rocks,
Their weight and texture
Colour , size and shape,
Which to lift with thighs, arms and back
And which to call a friend.
Build a dry stone wall, if you can,
Learn how they fit together or don't,
Which will yield to the chisel's tooth,
How they split in heat and cold
And multiply.
Learn about rocks:
Sit among the towering ones
If you want to grasp,
Beyond what travellers know,
The soul of the great Karoo.

from the great Karoo by Clive Lawrence
